Legendary NFL Linebacker & Denver Broncos Ring of Fame Inductee; Author of "Heart of a Student Athlete"; Award-Winning Motivational Speaker
Karl Mecklenburg Biography
Karl Mecklenburg's path to the National Football League is recognized as one of professional football's notable underdog stories. Mecklenburg was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the 12th round from the University of Minnesota as the 310th player selected. A walk-on at Minnesota, Mecklenburg became one of the Broncos' most versatile and productive defenders, earning the nickname the Albino Rhino for his bull-rushing style. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, which allowed him to choose between a career in medicine or professional football. Mecklenburg ultimately chose football.
Mecklenburg's progression from late-round draft pick to All-Pro highlights his adaptability and football intelligence. He played all seven defensive front positions—defensive end, nose tackle, outside linebacker, and inside linebacker variations—during a season in which he recorded a career-high 13 sacks, earning his first Pro Bowl selection and first-team All-Pro honors. He was named All-AFC and All-NFL four times and was recognized as AFC Player of the Year by Football News.
During his 12-year NFL career, Mecklenburg compiled statistics that rank among the best in Broncos franchise history. He finished his career with 1,145 tackles and a franchise-record 79 sacks. His career high of 13 sacks in a single season set a franchise record at the time, and he posted eight seasons with at least seven sacks. Mecklenburg recorded 11 multiple-sack games and is the only player in team history to record four sacks in a game twice. He posted 100 tackles in a season six times, including a career and team-high 143 stops. Mecklenburg contributed to seven postseason appearances, five division titles, and three Super Bowl berths for Denver. NFL Films included Mecklenburg among the Top 10 Denver Broncos of All Time.
Mecklenburg was inducted into the Denver Broncos Ring of Fame and the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame and was a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for eight consecutive years. He is one of only two players in NFL history with at least 70 sacks, five interceptions, and over 1,000 tackles; the other is Rickey Jackson. Mecklenburg has spoken openly about the long-term effects of football, noting he suffered numerous concussions during his career and later experienced cognitive issues, including memory impairment, which he attributes to those injuries.
After retiring from professional football, Mecklenburg established a second career as a motivational speaker and author. He is the only NFL player to have earned the Certified Speaking Professional designation from the National Speakers Association. The lessons he learned in the NFL about teamwork, courage, dedication, desire, honesty, forgiveness, and goal setting form his "Six Keys to Success." Mecklenburg is the co-author of "Meck For The Defense" and the author of "Heart of a Student Athlete," which received the Mom's Choice Awards Gold Recipient and the Mensa Sharp Writ Book Award for Best Book for Young Adults. He has hosted a radio program, worked as a television sideline reporter and studio analyst, and written columns for the Denver Post, establishing his presence as a multifaceted voice in professional football, sports leadership, and motivational speaking.
