Watts began her acting career in Australia, appearing in television series such as "Brides of Christ" and "Home and Away," as well as films like "Flirting," where she acted alongside Nicole Kidman. She gained critical acclaim for her performance in David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive," a role that revitalized her career and showcased her range. She continued to impress with roles in "The Ring," "21 Grams" —earning her first Academy Award nomination—and "King Kong." This acclaim led to nominations for two Academy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and two Golden Globe Awards.

In 2012, Watts received her second Academy Award nomination for portraying Maria Bennett in "The Impossible," a film based on the true story of a family's survival during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
