Michael Miebach

Michael Miebach is the Chief Executive Officer of Mastercard and a member of the company’s board of directors. Since becoming CEO in January 2021, he has led one of the world’s largest financial technology companies, guiding its strategy to expand beyond traditional credit card services into a broader digital payments platform. Under his leadership, Mastercard has focused on innovation in areas such as real-time payments, open banking, digital identity, cybersecurity, and data-driven services that support seamless global commerce.

Miebach joined Mastercard in 2010 and has held several key leadership roles, including President of the Middle East and Africa region and Chief Product Officer. In those positions, he played a major role in transforming Mastercard from a card-centric network into a technology-driven payments platform that serves businesses, governments, and consumers worldwide. Prior to Mastercard, he built extensive experience in the financial services industry through senior roles at Citibank and Barclays.

Born in Bavaria, Germany, Miebach earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Passau and completed executive education at Harvard Business School. Beyond his role at Mastercard, he serves on the board of directors of IBM and contributes to several global business and policy organizations, including the Business Roundtable and the World Economic Forum’s International Business Council.
