Jeremy Wade

Jeremy Wade is a writer, television presenter, and biologist recognized for his expertise in rivers and freshwater fish, with more than 30 years of experience exploring remote waterways. Wade holds a degree in zoology from Bristol University and a postgraduate teaching certificate in biological sciences from the University of Kent. He has also worked as a secondary school biology teacher.

Wade’s interest in the underwater world began in southeast England and led to his first overseas expedition to India’s mountain rivers. He has since tracked elusive and little-known fish species across the globe, with significant fieldwork in the Congo and Amazon rainforests. His method of collaborating with local fishermen and traveling to rarely visited regions has provided insights into aquatic biodiversity and human cultures.

Wade is the author of influential works such as "Somewhere Down The Crazy River," co-written with Paul Boote, and has contributed to major publications including The Times, Guardian, Sunday Telegraph, The Field, and BBC Wildlife Magazine. He has achieved several firsts in wildlife documentation, including filming a large unidentified creature in an Amazon lake and capturing the first underwater footage of the giant devil catfish in India.

Wade gained international recognition as the creator and host of the television series "River Monsters," which became Animal Planet’s highest-rated show and maintains a global audience. He has expanded his television work with series such as "Mighty Rivers" and "Dark Waters," establishing his authority on aquatic mysteries and environmental issues. Wade is also a public speaker, sharing his experiences and perspectives on exploration, wildlife, and conservation at events worldwide.

Throughout his career, Wade has faced challenges including surviving malaria, detainment as a suspected spy, near-drowning, threats at gunpoint, and a plane crash. When not traveling, he resides in Somerset, England, near Bath.
