Ilya Sutskever

Ilya Sutskever is a leading figure in artificial intelligence research, known for contributions to deep learning and neural networks. Sutskever began his career under the mentorship of Geoffrey Hinton at the University of Toronto, where he co-authored the influential AlexNet paper, "ImageNet Classification with Deep Convolutional Neural Networks." Developed with Hinton and Alex Krizhevsky, AlexNet demonstrated the effectiveness of convolutional neural networks in object recognition, significantly advancing computer vision and machine learning.

After earning his doctorate, Sutskever completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University with Andrew Ng and contributed as the only non-Google co-author of the AlphaGo paper, which showcased the potential of reinforcement learning in mastering complex strategy games.

Sutskever co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others, serving as Chief Scientist and leading research that resulted in advancements in large language models and generative AI. He played a central role in developing the GPT family of models, including "GPT-2" and "GPT-3," and advocated for the scaling hypothesis, which posits that increasing model size, data, and compute leads to new capabilities in neural networks. At OpenAI, Sutskever oversaw research that led to the launch of ChatGPT and the development of reasoning models such as "o1." He also co-led the "Superalignment" project, focused on aligning superintelligent AI with human values.

Sutskever later departed OpenAI to co-found Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) with Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy, establishing offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv. SSI adopts a safety-first approach, treating AI safety and capabilities as interconnected challenges. The company raised significant venture capital funding and attracted partnerships, including with Google Cloud, to support its research in safe artificial general intelligence. Sutskever became CEO of SSI, guiding its mission to integrate safety mechanisms into the foundation of superintelligent systems.

Sutskever's work has been recognized with honors such as inclusion in MIT Technology Review's "35 Innovators Under 35," election as a Fellow of the Royal Society, recognition in Time's list of the 100 most influential people in AI, and multiple Test of Time awards from Neural Information Processing Systems. He also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Toronto. Sutskever continues to contribute to advancements in artificial intelligence, focusing on the intersection of AI safety, machine learning, and the societal impact of emerging technologies.
