Fiona Harvey

Fiona Harvey is an environment editor at The Guardian. As an award-winning journalist, Harvey has been writing about the environment since 2000, and full time since 2004, a first for the Financial Times (FT) and then The Guardian. She is on the Woman’s Hour Power List of 30 top UK women in 2020, focusing on Our Planet.

Since then, environmental issues have transformed from being a niche concern and lifestyle issue to hard front page news. She’s covered every major environmental issue out there, from carbon markets and ocean plastic to air pollution and species loss. Harvey’s articles have a wide reach and her work continues to be crucial as the environment maintains its position at the top of the news agenda. She’s reported from the Amazon and the Arctic and has challenged world figures about their policies and impact on the planet.

Previously, she was technology writer, having joined the FT as an IT and telecoms reporter for FT.com in 2000.

Fiona has been a journalist since 1994. Before joining the FT, she was editor of PC Week, and was responsible for the launch of Internet World magazine in the UK. She has also written on a freelance basis for Scientific American, the New Scientist and the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

She has twice won the Foreign Press Association award for Best Environment Story, in 2005 and 2007, and was named Environment Journalist of the Year at the British Environment and Media Awards in 2007. She was named one of the 1,000 most influential people in London by the Evening Standard in 2007.

Fiona holds a degree in English Literature from Cambridge University.
