Coach Harold Jones

Harold Jones is a retired South Carolina high school football coach recognized for his act of compassion toward James Robert Kennedy, a young man with an intellectual disability. Jones first encountered Kennedy, known as Radio for his interest in radios, at T. L. Hanna High School in Anderson, South Carolina. Kennedy, then 18, was observed standing outside the football practice field, mimicking the coaches' actions. Jones extended friendship to Kennedy, inviting him to practices and helping him become involved with the team. Jones also worked with Kennedy's family to ensure he could attend Hanna High School, where Kennedy became a fixture at practices and games.

Throughout his career at Hanna High School, Jones served as head track coach, football coach, and athletic director, building a reputation for leadership and community involvement. The relationship between Jones and Kennedy became widely known after Gary Smith wrote an article for Sports Illustrated titled "Someone to Lean On." The story was later adapted into the movie "Radio," with Ed Harris portraying Jones and Cuba Gooding Jr. as Kennedy. The film highlighted themes of inclusion, compassion, and the impact of mentorship in sports and education.

After the film's release, Jones became a public speaker and advocate, traveling with Kennedy to speak at events, universities, and organizations. Jones was invited to share his story at the College Hall of Fame in South Bend, Indiana, and supported the Outdoor Dream Foundation, which grants experiences for young people with life-threatening illnesses. Jones and Kennedy maintained their friendship for more than 50 years, with Jones's message about the power of kindness and inclusion resonating in the sports and education communities.
