|

|
With an impressive career batting average of .307 -- the seventh-highest mark in Yankees history -- the first baseman ranks second on the team's all-time list in doubles (442), fifth in hits (2,153), seventh in home runs (222) and eighth in RBIs (1,099). During the 1987 season, he set a major-league record by hitting a home run in eight consecutive games: he hit 10 during that span. And, he set another record in '87 by slugging six grand slams. In 1985, he was selected as the American League's Most Valuable Player after batting .324 with 48 doubles, 35 home runs and 145 runs batted in, becoming the first Yankee to win the award since Thurman Munson in 1976. Following in the foot steps of another great hitter, in 1984 Mattingly became the first Yankee to win the American League batting championship since Mickey Mantle in 1956.
Don Mattingly was selected by the Yankees in the 19th round of the 1979 June amateur draft out of Memorial High School in Evansville, Ind. The Yankees called him up for seven games at the end of the 1982 season, and he played in 91 major-league games in 1983 before landing a full-time spot on the roster in 1984.
Committed to helping underprivileged children, Don Mattingly serves on the advisory board for The Children's Health Fund of New York. In addition, he donated $100 for each home run his team hit to the Fund to provide mobile medical service to the underprivileged children in New York City. In 1993, he received the Joan Payson Humanitarian Services Award for community service from the New York Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association.
Don Mattingly retired from baseball as a New York Yankee following the 1995 season.
