Architect, Urbanist & Professor of Public Culture at UC San Diego; Director of Cross-Border Urban Research; Principal at Estudio Teddy Cruz + Fonna Forman
Teddy Cruz Biography
Teddy Cruz is an architect, urbanist, and professor whose work focuses on the intersection of design, public policy, and social equity. Cruz holds an MDes from Harvard Graduate School of Design and serves as a professor of public culture and spatial practice in the Department of Visual Arts at University of California San Diego, where he is also director of cross-border urban research in the Center on Global Justice. As an architect and urban researcher, Cruz is recognized for his work on the Tijuana-San Diego bioregion, using it as a laboratory for addressing urbanization challenges such as social and economic inequality, migratory shifts, urban informality, climate change, and public engagement.
Cruz's urban research on the Tijuana/San Diego border advances border neighborhoods as sites of cultural production, rethinking urban policy, affordable housing, and civic infrastructure. In collaboration with community-based nonprofits such as Casa Familiar, Cruz and his team explore new approaches to affordable housing in relation to urban policy that includes social and cultural programs. Cruz is a principal in Estudio Teddy Cruz + Fonna Forman, a research-based political and architectural practice in San Diego that investigates informal urbanization, civic infrastructure, and public culture, merging architecture and urbanism, political theory and urban policy, visual arts, and public culture.
Cruz and Forman lead urban curatorial initiatives, including the Civic Innovation Lab to rethink public space and civic engagement, the UCSD Cross-Border Initiative to promote research and practice focused on regional territories of poverty, and the UCSD Community Stations to foster knowledge exchange between the university and marginalized communities. They collaborated with former Bogotá Mayor Antanas Mockus to develop the Bi-national Citizenship Culture Survey, a protocol that surveyed cross-border civic infrastructure, public trust, and social norms to generate shared urban policies between the municipalities of San Diego and Tijuana.
Cruz has received the Rome Prize in Architecture, the Ford Foundation Visionaries Award, the Architecture Award from the US Academy of Arts and Letters, the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture by the French National Museum of Architecture in partnership with UNESCO, and the Vilcek Prize in Architecture. His honors also include the James Stirling Memorial Lecture on the City Prize by the Canadian Center of Architecture and the London School of Economics. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including representing the US in the Venice Architecture Biennale and "Small Scale Big Change" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Cruz's writing has been published widely, including features in the New York Times, The Guardian, and Harvard Design Magazine.
Cruz's philosophy challenges conventional limits of architectural practice. He has devoted his professional and academic life to understanding and improving the citizenship experience of people living along the US-Mexico border, arguing that it is not enough to design physical systems—architects must also design the political, civic, and economic processes that enable those systems to be inclusive. After years of research in the Tijuana-San Diego area as a high-density zone of trade and urban relationships, Cruz suggests that highly planned cities in the developed world can learn from these developments. His TED Talk, "How Architectural Innovations Migrate Across Borders," has brought his ideas to a global audience, establishing him as a significant voice in contemporary urbanism, border studies, and architectural innovation.
