Veteran Film & Television Actor; Known for "Dexter," "The Warriors" & "Oppenheimer"
James Remar Biography
James Remar is an actor whose career spans more than four decades in film, television, and voice acting. Remar studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City and transitioned to acting after being laid off from a roofing job, giving himself three years to pursue the profession before considering other options.
Remar first gained attention as Ajax in Walter Hill's cult classic "The Warriors" and later appeared as a psychotic prison escapee in the action comedy "48 Hrs." He also performed on Broadway with Richard Gere in the concentration camp drama "Bent" and portrayed Dutch Schultz in "The Cotton Club." Although often associated with villainous roles, Remar has taken on a variety of characters, including the young Cheyenne Windwalker in "Windwalker," for which he delivered his lines in the Cheyenne language. He appeared in "Renaissance Man" and "Boys on the Side" before moving into television, where he played Richard Wright on "Sex and the City" on HBO.
Remar continued to work in both television and film, earning recognition for his long-running role as Harry Morgan, the adoptive father and mentor to Michael C. Hall's character on "Dexter" on Showtime. In this role, Remar portrayed a former Miami Metro police officer who adopts Dexter and guides him through his struggles, appearing as an apparition throughout the series. He received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for this performance. Remar also won the SAG Award as part of the Outstanding Comedy Ensemble for "Sex and the City," and as a member of the ensemble cast of "Dexter," he was nominated for both the SAG Award and the Emmy.
Remar's film credits include roles in "Drugstore Cowboy," "Django Unchained," "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," "Oppenheimer," and "Megalopolis." In "Oppenheimer," he portrayed Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, contributing to the ensemble cast that won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Remar was honored with the Saturn Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in science fiction, fantasy, and horror.
Remar played Peter Gambi on the superhero drama "Black Lightning," a series regular throughout its four-season run. He was later cast as General Shaw in "It: Welcome to Derry," a television series prequel to the supernatural horror film "It," which aired on HBO. Remar also reprised his role as Harry Morgan in "Dexter: Resurrection." With a filmography that includes cult classics, prestige dramas, and blockbuster ensembles, Remar is recognized as a compelling and adaptable character actor in the entertainment industry.
