June Squibb Biography

June Squibb is an actress whose career spans more than seven decades, encompassing Broadway, film, television, and voice acting. Squibb began her career with her Broadway debut in the musical "Gypsy." In the early years of her acting career, she focused on theater, training at the Cleveland Play House before moving to New York City, where she joined the Herbert Berghof Studio in Greenwich Village. Her film debut came in Woody Allen's romantic comedy "Alice." She later held supporting roles in films such as "The Age of Innocence," "In & Out," "Meet Joe Black," "About Schmidt," and "Far from Heaven."

Squibb spent much of her acting career in supporting roles until gaining recognition for her performance in the comedy-drama "Nebraska." Director Alexander Payne, with whom Squibb had previously worked on "About Schmidt," cast her as Kate, the outspoken wife of the film's central character, Woody Grant. For her work in "Nebraska," Squibb received the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress, as well as nominations for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a Golden Globe Award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, and the Independent Spirit Award.

In her first leading film role, Squibb portrayed Thelma in the action comedy "Thelma." The film features Squibb as a woman who falls victim to a phone scam and sets out to find the perpetrators with the help of her grandson and a friend, played by Richard Roundtree. Squibb performed many of her own stunts in the film, playing Thelma Post, a 93-year-old grandmother who embarks on a quest across Los Angeles to reclaim what was taken from her. The film received positive reviews and was named one of the top ten independent films by the National Board of Review. On Rotten Tomatoes, 98 percent of critics' reviews were positive. Squibb also starred in a leading role in "Eleanor the Great," Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut.

Squibb has lent her voice to several animated films, including "Ralph Breaks the Internet," "Toy Story 4," "Soul," "Inside Out 2," and "Zootopia 2." Her television work includes appearances on shows such as "Grey's Anatomy," "Shameless," "The Big Bang Theory," "Modern Family," "Glee," "Girls," and "Curb Your Enthusiasm." She was inducted into the Cleveland Play House Hall of Fame.

Squibb received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for "Marjorie Prime," making history as the oldest nominee. In "Marjorie Prime," Squibb plays the title character, an elderly woman battling dementia and memory loss who uses an AI-generated Prime of her late husband to help preserve and revisit memories from their life together. The Marjorie Prime company featured Tony Award-winner Danny Burstein, Christopher Lowell, two-time Tony Award-winner Cynthia Nixon, and Squibb in the title role.

Squibb's career demonstrates versatility across stage, film, television, and voice acting, contributing to the entertainment industry through dramatic and comedic roles, animated features, and Broadway productions.
