Jonathan Kanter Biography
Jonathan Kanter is an antitrust lawyer known for his commitment to competition enforcement and antitrust policy. Kanter began his career as an attorney for the Federal Trade Commission Bureau of Competition, later joining several large law firms before founding The Kanter Law Group, where he focused on antitrust enforcement. Prior to establishing his own firm, Kanter served as co-chair of the antitrust practice at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison. He has represented rivals of major American technology companies, including Google and Facebook, in both the United States and Europe.
Kanter served as assistant attorney general for the Antitrust Division at the U.S. Department of Justice, where he was the administration’s senior antitrust enforcement official. During his tenure, Kanter restructured and revitalized the Antitrust Division, overseeing an agency with more than 800 employees and an annual budget exceeding $300 million. He is associated with the anti-monopolistic New Brandeis movement and is recognized for his work in digital economy regulation and antitrust litigation.
As assistant attorney general, Kanter led cases against corporations such as Google, Apple, and Live Nation-Ticketmaster. His division secured significant outcomes, including a major antitrust trial against Google’s search practices, blocking mergers that threatened competition in labor markets, and obtaining the first criminal monopolization conviction in more than four decades. Kanter also collaborated with Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan on efforts to reform federal merger guidelines.
Kanter’s approach at the Department of Justice was shaped by interdisciplinary influences, incorporating lawyers, economists, data scientists, and strategy experts. His nomination received endorsements from former assistant attorneys general across party lines. Industry observers have ranked Kanter among the most effective and innovative antitrust lawyers.
Since leaving government service, Kanter has continued to influence the national conversation on competition, technology, and artificial intelligence regulation. He serves as a professor of law at Washington University and as a professor of technology policy at Carnegie Mellon. Kanter has also held the position of Distinguished Service Professor at Heinz College, where he has delivered keynote addresses and engaged with public policy leaders. He remains an influential voice in antitrust law, digital markets, and technology policy.
