Josh Cowen is an author and professor of education policy at Michigan State University who has written, testified and spoken widely on education policy and politics. Cowen's writing has appeared in TIME, The Dallas Morning News, The Detroit Free Press, The Houston Chronicle, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Slate and The New Republic, and his work has been covered in The New York Times, NPR, NBC News, ProPublica, CBS News, Forbes, Fox News, CNN, New York Magazine, TIME, and the podcast, American Conversations with Heather Cox Richardson, among other major media outlets. The National Education Association named Cowen its 2025 Friend of Education -- its highest honor -- alongside previous winners Dolly Parton, Quinta Brunson, Malala Yousafzai and Bill and Hillary Clinton.
