Alicia Seiger Biography

Alicia Seiger is an expert at the intersections of climate, technology, policy, finance, and innovation, with more than two decades of experience designing and executing climate and energy strategies for businesses, foundations, investors, and nongovernmental organizations. Seiger directs the climate program at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, where she applies a disciplined, strategy-first approach to philanthropic climate investment. She emphasizes the importance of strategic planning, effective investment tools, and robust carbon accounting methods to drive meaningful change in the climate sector.

Before joining the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Seiger led sustainability and energy finance initiatives at Stanford Law, the Graduate School of Business, and the Doerr School for Sustainability. During her tenure, she shaped the field of sustainable finance and developed financial innovations to mobilize philanthropic and long-term capital for rapid decarbonization of the global economy. She created "Investing in a New Climate," an investor workshop series designed to help asset owners manage climate risk and capitalize on innovation opportunities. Seiger has also testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services on the macroeconomic impacts of climate change, establishing her as a trusted voice in climate policy.

Seiger has an entrepreneurial background, having been involved in the early development of the web advertising and carbon offset industries. She has held leadership roles at multiple startups, including TerraPass, a pioneer in the U.S. voluntary carbon offset market, and Flycast Communications, one of the first web advertising networks. This experience informs her practical perspective on leveraging markets, technology, and capital to address climate change.

Seiger has advised the governors of California and New York, the New York State Comptroller, and numerous pension fund, endowment, and family office chief investment officers on climate risk, opportunity, and resiliency. She has served as co-chair of the State of California Climate-related Risk Disclosure Advisory Group and as a New York State Decarbonization Advisory Panel member. Her governance work includes co-founding Stanford Professionals in Energy and serving on the boards of Prime Coalition and The E-liability Institute, as well as on the editorial board of Oxford Open Climate Change Journal.

Seiger is the author of "Settling Climate Accounts: Navigating the Road to Net Zero," which examines the history of climate action, the challenges of achieving net zero, and recommendations for future progress. She holds an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business and an undergraduate degree from Duke University, where she designed a curriculum combining environmental science and policy with cultural anthropology. This interdisciplinary foundation continues to inform her approach to addressing global climate challenges.
