David G. Stork Biography

Dr. David G. Stork, PhD, graduated in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Maryland. He has held faculty positions in physics, mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, statistics, computational and mathematical engineering, symbolic systems, neuroscience, psychology, and art and art history at Wellesley College, Swarthmore College, the Technical University of Vienna, Clark University, Boston University, and Stanford University, where he teaches.

Dr. Stork is the founding pioneer of the use of sophisticated artificial intelligence and computer vision applied to problems in the history and interpretation of fine art paintings and drawings. He co-founded the field's first conference, taught its first courses at Stanford University and later at the Courtauld Institute of Art and the Technical University of Vienna, and published its first book, "Pixels & Paintings: Foundations of Computer-Assisted Connoisseurship."

He has lectured widely at leading art museums around the world, as well as at academic conferences and universities. He also co-created the PBS documentary "2001: HAL's Legacy," which compared the visions of 2001: A Space Odyssey with actual computer science developments in the namesake year.

Dr. Stork is an award-winning teacher and has published more than 220 scholarly articles, nine books and 64 U.S. patents. His work has garnered more than 100,000 scholarly citations and several academic awards. He was chief scientist of the American arm of the $15 billion international Ricoh Co. in its Silicon Valley lab, is an advisor to the AI Capital venture fund, and has been associated with five startup companies, including most recently, as co-founder and chief scientist of Vrai-AI, which empowers anyone to detect fakes from mobile phone photographs of products and medicines.

David G. Stork Speaking Topics

  • AI and Art: The Coming Revolution

Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing how we study and understand, and how we create and enjoy, visual arts; as a result, fine art and our understanding of it will change more in the next 15 years than in the last half millennium. AI can “see” every surviving painting, drawing, and sculpture ever created (including in x-ray and other modalities), read every surviving art document and interpretation (in every language), access all information about art materials such as pigments, and more. AI can confront the scourge of fake art, solve more art crimes, reveal the appearance of masterpieces lost to war, and yield new insights and interpretations impossible to achieve without AI.

Likewise, AI image generation is enabling more people to create satisfying artworks more easily than ever before. Will this lead to a degradation and bland commodification of art, or instead an AI-empowered Renaissance yielding new forms of soaring masterpieces?

  • AI in the Movies and in Reality

*What can science fiction teach us about the coming era of ubiquitous AI? *

From “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Terminator,” “Star Wars,” and “I, Robot,” to “AI,” “The Matrix,” “Ex Machina,” “Her,” and others, visionary filmakers such as Kubrick, Spielberg, Lukas, and Cameron have presented visions of a future utopia (or more frequently distopia) where computers exceed human ability to think, fight, and control our world. Now as the era of general human-level AI is upon us, we can ask: what did these films “get right” or “get wrong” about our current and future world? How can these films guide us to an AI future we want… and need?

This profusely illustrated talk, based on the speaker’s four decades in AI research, his book, “HAL’s Legacy: 2001’s computer as dream and reality,” and the PBS documentary “2001: HAL’s Legacy,” will change forever how you see AI movies and think about our impending AI reality.
