President of Basketball Operations for the Philadelphia 76ers
Mike Gansey Biography
Mike Gansey is a basketball executive and former player recognized for his progression from college athlete to NBA front office leader. Raised in Olmsted Falls, Ohio, Gansey was a three-time All-State player in high school and the school's all-time leading scorer, averaging 27.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game as a senior, earning Ohio Division II Player of the Year honors. He began his college basketball career at St. Bonaventure University before transferring to West Virginia, where he earned first-team Big East recognition. Gansey played a key role in the Mountaineers' appearances in the Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen, generating NBA draft interest after averaging 16.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.9 steals as a senior.
Gansey went undrafted after college and signed a free-agent contract with the Miami Heat. He faced significant health challenges, including a severe MRSA infection that ultimately led to his retirement after playing professional basketball overseas. Despite not playing in the NBA, Gansey spent several seasons as a professional athlete before joining the Cleveland Cavaliers as a front office intern.
Gansey advanced through the Cavaliers organization, beginning as a seasonal assistant and later working with the Cleveland Charge, the franchise's G League affiliate. He was named the NBA Development League's Basketball Executive of the Year. During his tenure, the Charge developed players such as Quinn Cook, who won the D-League Rookie of the Year award and later became a two-time NBA champion with the Warriors. Gansey was promoted to assistant general manager of the Cavaliers and later became general manager following Koby Altman's elevation to President of Basketball Operations.
Gansey played a significant role in building the Cavaliers into consistent NBA postseason contenders, including a run to the Eastern Conference Finals after a 52-win season and a major trade involving Darius Garland and James Harden. He has been instrumental in the Cavaliers' draft process and, as general manager, oversaw the acquisition of players such as Donovan Mitchell, De'Andre Hunter, Keon Ellis, Dennis Schröder, and James Harden.
Gansey later agreed to become President of Basketball Operations for the Philadelphia 76ers, taking on his first role as the lead decision-maker for an NBA franchise. He joined a Sixers team that achieved a 45-37 regular season record and advanced to the second round of the NBA playoffs. With a background in scouting and experience as both a G League and NBA general manager, Gansey brings a comprehensive perspective to basketball operations and player development in the NBA.
