Veronica Escobar Biography

Veronica Escobar is a public servant with a career focused on community advocacy, government reform, and national leadership. Before entering elected office, Escobar served as executive director of Community Scholars, a nonprofit organization that employed high school students to conduct public policy research and produce reports on El Paso's challenges and opportunities. She also worked as an English teacher at the University of Texas at El Paso and El Paso Community College, and as communications director for former Mayor Raymond Caballero. Escobar earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas and a master's degree in English literature from New York University.

Escobar served as an El Paso County commissioner and later as the El Paso County judge. During her tenure as county judge, she addressed issues of corruption and self-dealing, implemented internal reforms, and modernized county government. She initiated legislation that created the only County Ethics Commission in Texas and secured legislation to increase transparency and accountability over other taxing jurisdictions. Her record of reform and her connections to the border region led to her election to the U.S. House of Representatives, where she became the first woman elected to her seat and one of the first two Latinas from Texas to serve in Congress.

In Congress, Escobar has served on the House Judiciary Committee, House Armed Services Committee, and House Ethics Committee. She was elected as one of three co-chairs of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee. Escobar nominated Representative Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker of the House and was one of four chairs of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Escobar is recognized as a voice for the border and a national leader on gun safety, healthcare, reproductive justice, and immigration. She has sponsored bills including the "Homeland Security Improvement Act," the "Asylum Seeker Protection Act," and the "Department of Defense Climate Resiliency and Readiness Act." Her bipartisan immigration reform bill, "The Dignity Act," has been noted for providing solutions to immigration challenges. Escobar also delivered the Spanish-language response to a State of the Union Address, further establishing her role in national politics.
