Bestselling Historical Fiction & Suspense Author; New York Times Bestseller; Co-Author with James Patterson
Mark Sullivan Biography
Mark Sullivan is an American author known for his work in mystery, suspense, and historical fiction, with a career spanning nearly three decades and more than 19 novels. After earning a graduate degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, Sullivan began a career in investigative journalism, eventually joining the San Diego Tribune, where he reported on mortgage scandals, the corporate funeral home industry, and the lives of children growing up with addicted parents. His years in journalism provided him with a keen understanding of institutions, human pressure, and the complexities of society—qualities that inform his fiction.
At age 30, Sullivan began writing fiction in his spare time, publishing short stories in various literary journals. He later took a leave from journalism to live among extreme skiers in Utah and Wyoming, an experience that inspired his first novel, "The Fall Line," which was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. He followed with "Hard News," a thriller based on his reporting experience, and "The Purification Ceremony," which won the WH Smith Award for Best New Talent and was named Best Book of the Year by the Los Angeles Times.
Sullivan is recognized for his deeply researched historical fiction. His novel "Beneath a Scarlet Sky" tells the story of Pino Lella, an Italian spy for the Resistance during World War II. Sullivan developed a personal friendship with Lella during the research and writing process, which influenced the book's emotional depth. The novel became a bestseller, reached number one on the Kindle bestseller list, was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award in the Best Historical Fiction category, and became a New York Times bestseller. Pascal Pictures acquired the film rights, with Tom Holland set to portray Pino Lella. Sullivan continued his focus on historical storytelling with "The Last Green Valley," set during World War II on the Eastern Front, and "All the Glimmering Stars," inspired by the true story of two teens kidnapped by an African warlord and forced into the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda.
In addition to his solo work, Sullivan has collaborated with thriller author James Patterson, co-authoring five number one New York Times Bestsellers, including "Private Paris," "Private L.A.," and "Private Berlin." His novels have been optioned for film, translated into multiple languages, and appeared on international bestseller lists. Sullivan has received several awards for his writing, including the WHSmith Fresh Talent Award, and his works have been recognized by the New York Times and Los Angeles Times.
With a background that includes Peace Corps service in West Africa, a decade of investigative journalism, and a passion for adventure, Sullivan brings real-world experience to his stories, establishing his reputation in the fields of historical fiction, suspense, and mystery writing.
