Nataanii Means Biography
Nataanii Means is a hip-hop artist, organizer, and culture-bearer from the Oglala Lakota, UmoNhoN (Omaha), and Diné Nations. Means began making music while studying at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, after growing up on the Navajo reservation in Chinle, Arizona. He started rapping to share personal stories and amplify the voices of his community, blending lyricism and modern resistance with influences from hip-hop, protest music, and traditional upbringing.
Means has developed a discography that explores the Indigenous experience. His debut album, "2 Worlds," has accumulated more than a million plays and established his presence through performances, tours, and speaking engagements focused on activism and the complexities of navigating both reservation life and broader society. His second album, "Balance," was written, executive produced, mixed, and mastered by Means, offering a personal perspective on introspection. His third album, "Growth," is a 16-track collaborative project featuring Native musicians from across the country and has garnered significant international attention with over half a million streams.
In addition to his music career, Means is active in Indigenous rights and environmental justice. He participated in the movement against the Dakota Access Pipeline, living at the prayer camps in Cannonball, North Dakota, and engaging in nonviolent direct actions. Means used his platform to document and share the events at Standing Rock, and joined other Indigenous musicians on the Voice of Water: Wake Up The World Tour, which included live performances and panel discussions on Indigenous activism.
Means has performed at venues, universities, schools, and youth programs across the United States, Canada, and Europe. He appeared in MTV's "Rebel Music: Native America" series and Viceland's "Standing Rock Pt. II." As an actor and composer, Means is known for his roles in "Frybread Face and Me" and "Drunktown's Finest." His work has been featured in publications such as LA Times, NY Times, Billboard Magazine, and The Fader, and he has appeared on talk shows including "The Breakfast Club" and "Ebro in the Morning."
As a clean energy organizer and advocate for tribal nations, Means integrates music and activism to protect land, empower youth, and advance Indigenous futurism. His work addresses Indigenous justice, identity, and sovereignty, challenging colonial legacies and inspiring new generations through storytelling and resistance in contemporary Indigenous music.
