Patricia Watson Biography

Patricia Watson, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and senior educational specialist with a focus on trauma recovery, disaster mental health, and resilience-building. Watson has served as a psychologist for the National Center for PTSD and previously worked as an active duty Navy psychologist, providing care to adults, children, and families. She earned a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Catholic University and completed a postgraduate fellowship in pediatric psychology at Harvard Medical School. Watson holds an appointment as an assistant professor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth in the Department of Psychiatry.

Watson is recognized for her role in developing evidence-based resources for trauma and disaster response. In collaboration with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and the National Center for PTSD, she co-authored the "Psychological First Aid (PFA) Field Guide" and the "Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR) Manual," both widely used in immediate and intermediate disaster intervention. She is also a co-author of the "Stress First Aid (SFA)" self-care and peer support model, originally named Combat Operational Stress First Aid, which has been adapted for fire and rescue personnel, rail workers, public safety personnel, health care professionals, and pre-trial and probation staff.

Watson's expertise spans high-stakes professional environments. She co-authored versions of Stress First Aid manuals for structural and wildland firefighters and EMS professionals with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and Department of Forestry, and for law enforcement and public safety personnel with the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. Watson has contributed as a subject matter expert and program manager for online courses and toolkits addressing burnout, secondary traumatic stress, provider resilience, police mental health, chaplain support, PTSD assessment, military culture, anger management, and sleep management.

As an author and researcher, Watson has co-edited three books on disaster behavioral health interventions and contributed articles on resilience, early intervention, and disaster mental health. Her work includes guidance documents for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other organizations, focusing on public and mental health interventions following terrorism, disaster, and pandemic flu. Watson serves as co-chair of the Early Intervention special interest group of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. Her career bridges research and practical application in trauma-informed care, psychological recovery, and resilience in national and international contexts.
