Dr. Daryl R. Van Tongeren is a social psychologist specializing in meaning, religion, and human virtue. He serves as a professor of psychology and director of the Frost Center for Social Science Research at Hope College. Van Tongeren's research in existential psychology and the psychology of religion examines existential meaning-making, particularly amid changes to deeply held beliefs, and has contributed to the empirical study of religious deidentification. He has authored more than 275 scientific publications, including six books, and his work has received over $15 million in external grant funding.

Van Tongeren's research addresses social psychological explanations for fundamental questions about meaning, the social motivation for meaning, the cognitive function of religion, and prosocial behaviors and virtues. By integrating social, personality, and existential psychology, he investigates how individuals reconstruct meaningful worldviews and identities following shifts in belief systems. His work also explores the consequences of meaning-making and prosociality for mental health, relationships, and social functioning. Van Tongeren has identified cross-cultural evidence for a religious residue effect, showing that religious psychology and behavior can persist after religious deidentification.

Van Tongeren is the author of several books that present his research to general audiences. His book "Humble: Free Yourself from the Traps of a Narcissistic World" explores the science of humility. In "The Courage to Suffer: A New Clinical Framework for Life's Greatest Crises," co-authored with another psychologist, he examines approaches to navigating significant life challenges. In "Done: How to Flourish After Leaving Religion," published by the American Psychological Association, Van Tongeren draws from psychological theories and research to analyze the emotional and social processes involved in religious change and provides science-based guidance for building a new life with or without religion.

Van Tongeren has received several honors for his scholarship, including the Association for Psychological Science Rising Star designation, the Society for the Psychology of Religion and Spirituality Margaret Gorman Early Career Award, and the Early Career Award from the International Society for the Science of Existential Psychology. He is a fellow of multiple professional organizations, including the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and the Society of Experimental Social Psychology. Van Tongeren serves as an associate editor for The Journal of Positive Psychology.
