George Hofstetter Biography
George Hofstetter is an American computer programmer, tech entrepreneur, and human rights activist recognized for his work at the intersection of technology, social justice, and Black rights advocacy. Hofstetter has contributed to the fields of hacktivism and disruptive innovation, focusing on leveraging technology to address systemic inequities. His educational background includes studies at Menlo College, the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, University of Oxford, and University of Cambridge.
Hofstetter began his technology career at age 13, participating in the Qeyno Labs Hackathon in Oakland, California, where he and his team developed the social network "Connect the Dots" to support Black students in predominantly white private schools. He later co-developed the app "CopStop," designed to address police violence in Oakland. His early work was featured in a documentary produced by KQED.
At 16, Hofstetter founded GHTech Inc., aiming to increase access for Black and Brown students to technology careers as innovators. He has developed systems and networks to connect students nationwide, including the "CopStop" app and the "UptoCode Academy" curriculum, which provides youth of color with tools for transformative education in computer science and entrepreneurship. Hofstetter has met with Megan Smith, former Chief Technology Officer for the White House, served as a technology intern in the Oakland Mayor’s office, and spoken at Capital One’s conference. He has also served as a University Innovation Fellow at Stanford University's d.school and as co-chair of the board of directors for Kingmakers of Oakland.
Hofstetter delivered a TEDxYouth talk at the Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences titled "How Technology Redefined Can Be a Social Justice Super Power." He is featured in the documentary "Use of Force: The Policing of Black America" alongside Alicia Garza and Chuck D. In collaboration with Reddit and University of Cambridge ThinkLab, Hofstetter and his team delivered lectures on disruptive innovation and social justice at nine HBCUs, donating funds and technology resources to each campus. The "Black Creativity and Hacktivism" series concluded with a Juneteenth Tech Summit in Oakland, focused on fostering dialogue and strengthening communities through technology.
Hofstetter has received recognition from the Equal Justice Society, The Root, The Black Global Honor Society, and local awards from Congresswoman Barbara Lee. Through GHTech Inc., he leads workshops on design thinking and social entrepreneurship, and presents keynotes on combating white supremacy through technology creation. Hofstetter is regarded as a credible voice on the future of equitable technology, encouraging the next generation of innovators of color to become architects of technology.
