Paul Mobley Biography

Paul Mobley is an American portrait photographer whose career spans commercial photography and documentary storytelling. After graduating from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Mobley moved to New York City to study portraiture, assisting photographers including Annie Leibovitz, Steve Steigman, and David Langley before establishing his own practice. Mobley has worked with a range of celebrity, corporate, advertising, and editorial clients, including American Express, Sony, Citigroup, Ford, Apple, Gourmet, Max Factor, Chevrolet, and Microsoft. His style is characterized by precision and a direct approach, focusing on building trust with subjects and capturing authentic portraits that reveal character.

A turning point in Mobley's career came after a period of creative burnout, which led him to reconnect with photography during a summer in Michigan. An encounter with local farmers inspired his first book, "American Farmer," for which he traveled more than 100,000 miles across the United States, documenting the stories of over 300 farm families. The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum recognized this work with the Western Heritage Award for Best Photography Book.

Mobley has published four photography books: "American Farmer," "Everyday Heroes," "If I Live to Be 100," and "American Firefighter." Each project involved extensive travel across the country, photographing Americans in their communities. "Everyday Heroes" profiles 50 individuals dedicated to improving the lives of others, highlighting social entrepreneurship and nonprofit leadership. "If I Live to Be 100" inspired a national museum tour titled If I Live to Be 100: Centenarian Portraits, featuring full-scale portraits of Americans who have reached 100 years of age.

Mobley's work documents the lives of farmers, centenarians, firefighters, and community leaders, combining technical skill with emotional depth. His portraits are recognized for presenting subjects with dignity and for creating lasting visual narratives of American life. Mobley has lectured at more than 100 universities and major corporations, sharing insights on authenticity, presence, and the value of ordinary moments for organizational culture and human connection.

A traveling exhibition of American Farmer continues to tour museums and colleges nationwide. Mobley received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the College for Creative Studies in recognition of his contributions to portrait photography and his commitment to documenting the lives of everyday Americans. Mobley's work continues to engage audiences in keynote presentations and exhibitions across the country.
