Financial Crime Expert & Former Swiss Banker; 1MDB Whistleblower; Co-Author of "Rendezvous with Injustice"; Featured in Netflix's "Man on the Run"
Xavier André Justo Biography
Xavier André Justo is a former Swiss banker and whistleblower known for his role in exposing the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) financial scandal. Justo began his banking career at UBS in Geneva and later co-founded an asset portfolio management company with branches in Paris and Luxembourg. After selling his company, he moved to London and served as director of international business development at PetroSaudi, where he was the third-ranking executive, working under Tarek Obaid and Patrick Mahony. Justo spent two decades in the banking industry before joining PetroSaudi, a company with limited assets and activity but notable for its deal with 1MDB, Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund.
While in London, Justo became concerned about the large sums of money being transferred, as PetroSaudi's directors received nearly $200 million in commissions. Obaid and Mahony orchestrated a major illicit transaction from 1MDB through a fraudulent joint venture, with 1MDB investing $1 billion into energy assets purportedly controlled by PetroSaudi. Of this, $700 million was diverted into an account controlled by financier Jho Low. In 2014, after leaving PetroSaudi, Justo disclosed more than 227,000 emails to journalists, including Clare Rewcastle Brown of The Sarawak Report and Ho Kay Tat of The Edge Malaysia. The leaked data provided evidence of fraud and led to the exposure of one of the largest financial scams in history, resulting in significant fines and penalties for major law firms and banks, including a $3 billion fine for Goldman Sachs.
Justo was arrested in Koh Samui, Thailand, and sentenced to three years in prison after being forced to confess under duress. He spent 547 days in jail, providing investigators with information about billions of dollars missing from 1MDB. With the support of his wife, Justo brought media attention to his conviction, contacted Swiss and U.S. authorities, and secured his release after 18 months. The 1MDB scandal contributed to the downfall of Prime Minister Najib Razak and the long-ruling party in Malaysia.
Following his release, Justo has focused on advocacy, authorship, and public speaking related to financial crime, banking, compliance, and ethics. He is the co-author, with his wife, of the book "Rendezvous with Injustice." His story is featured in the Netflix documentary "Man on the Run," which examines the 1MDB scandal and the involvement of Najib Razak and Jho Low. The Edge Media Group chairman awarded Justo $2 million for his role in exposing wrongdoing at 1MDB. He has been recognized as a Whistleblower of the Year nominee and was shortlisted for the Allard Prize for Integrity.
Justo continues to advise on financial crime and is a speaker at international conferences, drawing on more than 30 years of experience in finance, intelligence, and investigative work. His insights on corporate governance, whistleblower protection, and the impact of financial fraud provide valuable perspectives for audiences in the finance and compliance sectors.

Whistleblowing
Whistleblowing is an indispensable process for exposing unethical, illegal, or dangerous practices that exist within our society. Its importance cannot be overstated as it serves as a fundamental mechanism for holding powerful individuals and institutions accountable for their actions. By speaking out, whistleblowers can provide valuable information that may not have otherwise come to light, which in turn allows for greater transparency and helps protect the public from harm, such as environmental damage or unsafe working conditions.
Furthermore, whistleblowing is often the only way to bring attention to wrongdoing when traditional avenues of reporting are ineffective or corrupted. When whistleblowers come forward, it not only allows for the exposure of wrongdoing but also encourages others to come forward with information, creating a culture of accountability and transparency. It can also lead to positive changes in laws and regulations, as well as increased public awareness, further emphasizing its importance in our society.
In addition, it serves as a check against abuses of power, preventing corruption and misconduct. Whistleblowers should be protected from retaliation, as they may face backlash from those they expose. It is imperative that the legal system recognizes the value of whistleblowing and implements adequate protections to ensure that those who come forward are not penalized for their actions.
Overall, whistleblowing is a crucial tool for maintaining the integrity and fairness of our society. Without whistleblowers, many harmful practices would go unnoticed, and powerful individuals and institutions would be free to act with impunity, leading to devastating consequences for the public.

It is a reflection of an individual's commitment to honesty, transparency, and ethical conduct in their personal and professional life. Individuals who prioritize integrity tend to be respected and valued in their community and workplace. This is because they are viewed as trustworthy and dependable, which makes them more effective at building meaningful connections with others. Furthermore, living a life of integrity allows for greater authenticity, as individuals who prioritize integrity tend to be true to themselves and their beliefs.
Integrity also means taking responsibility for one's actions and being accountable for the consequences. This fosters a sense of personal growth and development, as individuals learn from their mistakes and strive to do better in the future. By prioritizing integrity, individuals can make better decisions that align with their values and principles, leading to a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Living a life of integrity is crucial for personal growth and success.
