The Friends Helping Diversify the Rock Climbing Community
Minority communities face many barriers to recreational activities in the outdoors. Climbing gyms in cities around America have created one of the most robust “pipelines” outdoor recreation has ever seen. As millennials flock to them in growing numbers, both opportunities and challenges arise. How do we insure these potential stewards transition outside, that the ways they recreate are informed by a conservation ethic—and that their experiences translate to jobs in the outdoor industry?
The Friends Helping Diversify the Rock Climbing Community
REI Presents: Brothers of Climbing
“It was like Black Guy No. 1, Black Guy No. 2. That was the joke,” Pieter says. But where were the other climbers of color?
Brothers of Climbing, based in Brooklyn, New York, is an organization that seeks to make the rock climbing community more diverse. Everyone benefits from inclusion, representation and a more welcoming community. We sat down with co-founder Mikhail Martin to discuss how BOC got started and where it is going.
In 2017, Mikhail Martin of Brothers of Climbing and Bethany Lebewitz of Brown Girls Climb organized the first-ever Color the Crag at HP40. The first year saw a strong gathering of over a hundred climbers.
