Sanaa Abrar Biography
Sanaa Abrar is an immigrant and women's rights advocate committed to uplifting the voices of those who are often unheard. Abrar is working as a manager at The New American Majority Fund at the Democracy Alliance, an organization that assists in electing progressive champions and also holding these leaders accountable for promises they make on the campaign trail. NAM helps to fund the infrastructure necessary to advance a progressive agenda for America during non-election years, both at the state and grassroots level, to create a just democracy, a fair economy and an environmentally sustainable future.
Abrar's advocacy work includes the introduction and passage of the Dream and Promise Act in the House of Representatives; publication of a first-of-its-kind community research and report, The Truth About ICE and CBP; coalition building to defend against increases in funding for federal immigration enforcement agencies; and partnerships at the local level to advance tuition assistance for young people and people of color in New Mexico and anti-ICE policies in the DMV area.
Abrar's previous work also exemplifies her dedication to reaching out to other sisters of color who feel isolated and ostracized by their communities, to build together, organize and win. At United We Dream, Sanaa served as the Advocacy Director. She lead the organization's strategy on breaking down policy and legislation for UWD members and managed relationships on Capitol Hill as the organization pushed back against attacks on the immigrant community and advocated for permanent protections like the Dream Act. Prior to her work at United We Dream, Sanaa was the Research Coordinator at EMILY's List, where she led projects related to legislative and candidate research that contributed to electing pro-choice Democratic women at the local, state, and federal levels.
Abrar attended Washington University in St. Louis, where she received a degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies. She then acquired a Masters in Public Administration at American University.
Abrar was born in Karachi, Pakistan, and immigrated with her mother at three months old to reunite with her father in the United States. She calls both Kentucky and Washington, DC her homes.
