Visual Artist, Filmmaker, Rapper & Hip-Hop Pioneer; Emerged as Graffiti Artist in the 1970s; Author of "Everybody's Fly: A Life of Art, Music & Changing the Culture"
Fab 5 Freddy Biography
Fred Brathwaite, known professionally as Fab 5 Freddy (sometimes Fab Five Freddy), is a visual artist, filmmaker, rapper, and hip-hop pioneer whose career spans nearly five decades of cultural transformation. Brathwaite emerged in New York's downtown underground creative scene in the late 1970s as a graffiti artist and is recognized as one of the architects of the street art movement. He became a member of the Brooklyn-based graffiti group the Fabulous 5, known for painting entire sides of New York City subway cars. Alongside fellow member Lee Quiñones, Brathwaite transitioned from street graffiti to the fine art world, exhibiting in a gallery in Rome, Italy.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Brathwaite played a key role in connecting uptown hip-hop and graffiti scenes with downtown Manhattan's punk and art communities. He curated the "Beyond Words" exhibition at the Mudd Club and collaborated with artists such as Futura 2000, Keith Haring, Lee Quiñones, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Brathwaite's crossover into mainstream pop culture occurred when Debbie Harry referenced him in the Blondie song "Rapture," which became the first hip-hop video to be shown on MTV. Around this time, Brathwaite collaborated with New York underground filmmaker Charlie Ahearn to produce the film "Wild Style," which showcased the emerging hip-hop culture of the Bronx. "Wild Style" is regarded as the first film to illustrate hip-hop culture, bringing together break dancing, rapping, DJing, and graffiti. Brathwaite created the film's original music, co-produced it, and played a leading role as a Bronx hip-hop club promoter and former graffiti artist. His musical contributions include the single "Change the Beat," on which he rapped in both English and French. A phrase from this record is widely sampled in hip-hop music, first appearing on the Herbie Hancock single "Rockit" and used in thousands of hip-hop tracks since.
After directing music videos, Brathwaite was asked by MTV to host the program "Yo! MTV Raps," which became the channel's highest-rated show and introduced hip-hop culture to mainstream audiences worldwide. Hosting "Yo! MTV Raps," Brathwaite played a significant role in popularizing hip-hop on a global scale, interviewing pioneering artists such as Run-D.M.C. and Public Enemy. He also directed videos and commercials for artists like Queen Latifah, Nas, and Snoop Dogg, as well as for companies including Pepsi. Brathwaite served as an associate producer on the film "New Jack City," in which he also appeared.
Brathwaite made his directorial debut with the Netflix documentary "Grass Is Greener," which explores the cultural history of cannabis and its connection to music, as well as its racially motivated criminalization. The film features interviews with artists such as Snoop Dogg and B-Real from Cypress Hill, attorneys, influencers, and individuals affected by drug convictions, tracing a timeline from the jazz era to the present. Brathwaite also served as creative director for the hip-hop photography and culture exhibit "Contact High: A Visual History of Hip-Hop," hosted by The Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles.
Brathwaite has lectured at schools and universities worldwide, published articles for Vibe, XXL, and The New York Times Magazine, and authored the book "Fresh Fly Flavor: Words and Phrases of the Hip Hop Generation." He served as executive producer for the VH1 Hip Hop Honors TV specials. Brathwaite published his memoir, "Everybody's Fly: A Life of Art, Music and Changing the Culture," co-authored with Mark Rozzo and published by Viking Press. From subway cars to streaming platforms, from gallery walls to television screens, Brathwaite is recognized as a leading voice on the intersection of art, music, and culture, bridging the streets that shaped hip-hop and the global stages it occupies today.
