Zazel-Chavah O'Garra Biography

Zazel-Chavah O'Garra is a multidisciplinary artist, choreographer, dancer, educator, social worker, and disability advocate whose career encompasses the concert stage, Off-Broadway productions, and leadership in inclusive arts advocacy. O'Garra, a Presidential Arts Scholar, attended the University of Michigan and Empire State College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in dance performance. She performed with the Mark Dendy Dance Company and Alvin Ailey Wksp II, as well as in numerous musical theater productions in the United States and internationally. Before founding ZCO/DANCEPROJECT, O'Garra built a career that included concert stages, Off-Broadway productions, European tours, national commercials, and appearances in runway shows, catalogs, and on the covers of Essence Magazine. She also holds a Master of Social Work from Fordham University.

After being diagnosed with a meningioma, a benign brain tumor that resulted in partial paralysis, speech impairment, and cognitive challenges, O'Garra continued her work in the arts. Through dance, she found a pathway to healing and self-expression, dedicating her career to creating inclusive artistic spaces for people of all abilities. Her work supports individuals with disabilities in building confidence, cultivating independence, and sharing their stories.

O'Garra is the founder and artistic director of ZCO/DANCEPROJECT, a physically integrated dance company that highlights the artistry and experiences of disabled and non-disabled performers. The company incorporates genres such as modern, jazz, ballet, African dance, and spoken word. O'Garra established the company to inspire and showcase the strength of dancers with disabilities. Her work has been presented in theaters, public spaces, and festivals including ADA 30, WESTFEST Dance Festival, Judson Church, Dixon Place Theatre, Symphony Space, Cooper Hewitt Museum, the 4th International Festival of Disability, ABILITIES EXPO, Theatre for the New City, Jamaica Performing Arts Center, and the International Dance Festival in Karditsa, Greece.

O'Garra received the John F. Kennedy Center Very Special Arts — National Teaching Artist Fellowship and was named the inaugural member of the White House Disability Liaison. She appeared as a guest speaker and performing artist at the first Black History Month program on disability hosted at the White House. Her leadership has been recognized through grants and honors including the City Artist Corps Grant, Dance Advancement Fund, Queens Arts Fund, Caribbean Impact Award, Disability, Dance & Artistry Fellowship, and the Culture Push Disability Arts Fellowship. She has shared her story in performances of "Inside/Out: Voices of The Disability Community" and "Secret Histories," both directed by Ping Chong.

O'Garra works with the Brain Injury Association of New York State and YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities. She has served as a movement coach for the daytime drama "As the World Turns." As a public speaker and performer, O'Garra draws on her experience as a brain tumor survivor, her artistic expertise, and her commitment to social justice to challenge audiences to reimagine possibilities for artists and individuals with disabilities.
