Kerry Magro Biography
Dr. Kerry Magro Ed.D. is a leading figure in autism advocacy, drawing from both personal experience and professional expertise to advance understanding of neurodiversity. Nonspeaking until age two and a half and diagnosed with autism at age four, Magro credits speech therapy and music therapy as pivotal in his development from a nonspeaking child to a professional speaker. He began advocating for the disability community after publicly sharing his autism diagnosis as a freshman at Seton Hall University, a decision that led to a career as a nationally recognized speaker, author, and entertainment consultant.
Magro is among the few professionally certified speakers who are autistic in the United States, having delivered presentations at more than 1,000 events, including TEDxTalks and "Talks at Google." His speaking topics include neurodiversity, belonging, mental health, anti-bullying, disability, diversity, equity and inclusion, overcoming adversity, and health and wellness. He received the Autism Society's Outstanding Individual with Autism Award. Magro is frequently invited to address schools, corporations, and conferences worldwide, offering insights grounded in lived experience.
As an author, Magro has published several books focused on amplifying the voices of the autism community. His works include "Defining Autism From The Heart," "Autism and Falling in Love," "I Will Light It Up Blue," "Supporting Your Autism Journey," and "Autistics on Autism." His books have appeared on Amazon Best-Seller Lists for Special Needs Parenting. Magro also contributed to PBS Kids' "Carl the Collector." Through his writing, he has provided partial college scholarships to 150 autistic students, many of whom share their stories in his publications.
Magro's work in the entertainment industry centers on promoting authentic representation of autistic individuals in film and television. He has served as an autism consultant for projects such as Netflix's "Love on the Spectrum U.S.," Warner Bros.' "Joyful Noise," and "The Present." He received a credit on "Ezra" and consulted on several episodes of HBO's "Mrs. Fletcher." His consulting includes advising directors, reviewing scripts for authenticity, and providing autism training for casts and crews to foster inclusion and accurate representation.
Beyond his roles in speaking and entertainment, Magro founded the nonprofit KFM Making a Difference, which awards scholarships and grants to autistic students and special education classrooms. He also manages the Facebook page Kerry's Autism Journey, where he conducts interviews with self-advocates and engages a community of more than 214,000 followers. Magro has been featured in national media outlets including NBC's Today Show, CBS News, and The New York Times. Through his advocacy, writing, and consulting, Dr. Kerry Magro works to expand opportunities for autistic individuals and promote a broader understanding of autism as a unique way of experiencing the world.
