Sherenté Harris Biography

Sherenté Mishitashin Harris is a Narragansett Two Spirit cultural educator, artist, and activist whose work focuses on Indigenous identity, gender justice, and community storytelling. As a member of the Narragansett Turtle Clan, traditionally recognized as the storytelling clan, Harris shares stories of both cultural and personal history. Harris integrates their cultural path with their Two Spirit identity to foster dialogue and highlight perspectives often marginalized in mainstream narratives. Their work addresses Indigenous invisibility through writing, public speaking, performance, and visual art, aiming to educate and promote change within Indigenous communities.

Harris comes from a family of champion powwow dancers in Charlestown, Rhode Island. As a child, Harris competed as an Eastern War dancer, following in their father's footsteps. After identifying as Two Spirit—a pan-Indian term describing non-binary gender and sexuality in Native American communities—Harris encountered discrimination while participating in Fancy Shawl competitions. Despite challenges and uncertainty, Harris trained daily for a year to compete authentically. During competition, Harris faced resistance from powwow officials, though some judges supported and scored their performance. Harris has been recognized for advocacy within the Two Spirit community, including serving as Head Person at Dartmouth College's annual powwow and being named grand champion in fancy shawl dance.

Harris is the subject of the documentary "Being Thunder," directed by Stéphanie Lamorré, which explores their pursuit of gender inclusivity in the competitive and traditionally female fancy shawl dance. The film has been featured at multiple film festivals, including Inside Out Film Festival, Frameline, NewFest, and the American Indian Film Festival. "Being Thunder" received the Jury Award – Honorable Mention Documentary Feature at Durango Film: An Independent Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best Documentary at Provincetown Film Festival.

Harris has been recognized as an LGBT Icon and as a Presidential and Rhode Island Foundation Carter Roger Williams Scholar. They have contributed to cultural and language preservation through internships at Tomaquag Museum and the Narragansett Language Preservation and Revitalization Program. As a dual degree student at Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University, concentrating in ethnic studies and painting, Harris has advocated for the Narragansett tribe and advanced Indigenous representation in academic and artistic spaces. On campus, Harris participated in Brown's Land Acknowledgment Working Group and was a member of Decolonization at Brown. Harris delivered a TEDx talk titled "Complete the Circle" at TEDxURI, discussing the importance of revitalizing community traditions and increasing Indigenous visibility. Through powwow, gallery exhibitions, and public speaking, Harris remains a prominent voice for Indigenous visibility and Two Spirit representation.
