Indie Folk & Americana Band; Billboard Top 10 Album Artists; Known for "Rivers and Roads" & "All We Ever Knew"
The Head and the Heart Biography
The Head and the Heart is an American indie folk band known for blending Americana, country-rock, and classic pop, creating a sound characterized by layered harmonies and songwriting rooted in folk traditions. The group was formed by Josiah Johnson and Jonathan Russell after meeting at open mic nights at Conor Byrne pub in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood. The lineup expanded to include Charity Rose Thielen on violin, guitar, and vocals; Chris Zasche on bass; Kenny Hensley on piano; Tyler Williams on drums; and Matt Gervais on guitar and vocals. The band's music features vocal harmonies, piano and violin melodies, and prominent percussion, helping them gain recognition beyond the Pacific Northwest.
The Head and the Heart released a self-titled debut album on Sub Pop Records, which became one of the label's best-selling debut releases. The song "Rivers and Roads" received national exposure, appearing in the series finale of NBC's "Chuck," an episode of CBS's "How I Met Your Mother," and the season finale of Netflix's "Manifest." Early grassroots support included self-produced copies of their debut album sold at local record stores, leading to a contract with Sub Pop.
The band's second album, "Let's Be Still," reached number 10 on the Billboard 200 and topped the U.S. Folk and Independent Albums charts. After moving to Warner Bros., The Head and the Heart released "Signs of Light," featuring the Adult Alternative chart-topping single "All We Ever Knew," which peaked at number five on the Billboard 200. Following this release, Johnson departed and was replaced by Gervais.
The Head and the Heart continued to tour and later recorded "Living Mirage," which reached number 16 on the Billboard 200. Their fifth album, "Every Shade of Blue," produced the AAA chart-topping single "Virginia (Wind in the Night)." The band also appeared in the first episode of Showtime's comedy-drama Roadies, created by Cameron Crowe, as the opening act in the series debut.
After their time with Warner Bros., The Head and the Heart signed with Verve Forecast and released "Arrow" as the lead single from their sixth studio album, "Aperture," a self-produced project that reflected the collaborative approach of their early years. With six studio albums and a dedicated international audience, The Head and the Heart is recognized for its contributions to indie folk, Americana, and alternative music, as well as for live performances that foster a sense of community among audiences.
