Grammy Award-Winning Rock Band; Multi-Platinum Recording Artists; Creators of "Sex on Fire" & "Use Somebody"
Kings of Leon Biography
Kings of Leon is a rock band known for its evolution from Southern and garage rock roots to a prominent alternative rock sound. Formed in Tennessee, the group consists of brothers Caleb, Nathan, and Jared Followill, along with their cousin Matthew Followill. The band's early music blended Southern rock, garage rock, and blues influences, later expanding to incorporate a broader range of genres and a more alternative rock-based style.
The Followill brothers experienced a conservative upbringing, traveling throughout Oklahoma and the Deep South as their father served as a United Pentecostal Church preacher. Caleb and Nathan first moved to Nashville to pursue music, where their exposure to bands such as the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and the Clash broadened their musical perspectives. Jared and Matthew later joined them in Nashville, officially forming Kings of Leon.
The band gained initial recognition with the debut EP "Holy Roller Novocaine," which received positive reviews from Rolling Stone magazine. Subsequent albums, including "Aha Shake Heartbreak" and "Because of the Times," established Kings of Leon as key figures in Southern rock within both the American and international mainstream. The band achieved early success in the United Kingdom, earning multiple top 40 singles, two Brit Awards, and top-five placements on the UK Albums Chart. "Because of the Times" reached number 25 on the Billboard 200 and topped album charts in Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK.
Kings of Leon's commercial breakthrough came with the fourth studio album, "Only by the Night." The album produced hit singles "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody," both of which became top ten hits in several countries. "Only by the Night" peaked at number four on the Billboard 200, topped charts in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK, and received multiple multi-platinum certifications. The band won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and Best Rock Song for "Use Somebody." Kings of Leon have headlined major music festivals, including Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits.
Since their debut, Kings of Leon have released nine albums—"Youth & Young Manhood," "Aha Shake Heartbreak," "Because of the Times," "Only by the Night," "Come Around Sundown," "Mechanical Bull," "WALLS," "When You See Yourself," and "Can We Please Have Fun"—and have sold over 20 million albums and nearly 40 million singles worldwide. With the release of "WALLS," the band achieved their first simultaneous number one album debut in both the United States and United Kingdom. Kings of Leon have won four Grammy Awards from 12 nominations, including Record of the Year for "Use Somebody." The group has also received three NME Awards, two Brit Awards, and one Juno, and has headlined festivals such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and Glastonbury.
Kings of Leon continue to be recognized as a leading alternative rock band, with a touring history that includes headlining major festivals like Coachella, Glastonbury, Roskilde, Reading and Leeds, and multiple Lollapalooza events worldwide. With a catalog spanning more than two decades and a reputation for dynamic live performances, Kings of Leon remain a defining presence in rock music.
