Jean Reno Biography

Jean Reno is a French actor of Andalusian Spanish descent known for his screen presence and versatility in both European and Hollywood cinema. Reno established himself as a leading figure in French cinema through collaborations with director Luc Besson and has appeared in numerous international productions. After moving to France following his mother's death at age 17, Reno attended the Cours Simon School of Drama. He adopted the French version of his name and shortened his surname to Reno. Early in his career, his large frame led to roles as antagonists, but he later expanded his repertoire to include romantic-comedy leads and action heroes.

Reno's career began in French cinema, where he appeared in many of Luc Besson's films, including Besson's first short film. Their collaborations include "Nikita," "The Big Blue," and "Léon"—known as "The Professional" in the United States—featuring Natalie Portman. Reno earned three César Award nominations: Best Actor for "Les Visiteurs" and "Léon: The Professional," and Best Supporting Actor for "The Big Blue." He gained recognition with American audiences through "La Femme Nikita" and further established his presence with the thriller "The Professional." Reno is known for portraying complex characters who often reveal a human side beneath their exterior.

Following his breakthrough, Reno appeared in international productions such as "Mission: Impossible," directed by Brian De Palma and starring Tom Cruise, and "Ronin," directed by John Frankenheimer and co-starring Robert De Niro. He played Gilbert Ponton in the remake of "The Pink Panther" opposite Steve Martin and portrayed Captain Bezu Fache in the Ron Howard film "The Da Vinci Code." Fluent in French, English, and Italian, Reno has appeared in successful Hollywood and European productions, including "Les Visiteurs" and "Léon." He also provided the French-language voice for Mufasa in "The Lion King."

Reno's work includes credits in "My Penguin Friend," "Lift," "Antigang: La Relève," and the TV series "A Private Affair." Beyond acting, Reno has written novels, including "Emma" and its sequel "L'Évasion," which was inspired by real-world events. His debut novel was published in an initial print run of 30,000 copies and sold translation rights in more than 20 countries. With a career spanning decades and continents, Reno is recognized for his contributions to world cinema and his ability to perform across languages and genres.
