Stephanie Murphy Biography

Stephanie Murphy is a politician, businesswoman, and policy expert whose life story spans from Vietnamese refugee to U.S. Congresswoman. Born in Vietnam, Murphy and her family fled the Communist regime by boat as an infant, were rescued at sea by the U.S. Navy, spent time in a Malaysian refugee camp, and eventually relocated to the United States. Her career has included roles in the boardroom, the classroom, the Pentagon, and Congress.

Before her election to Congress, Murphy worked as a national security specialist at the United States Department of Defense, an executive at Sungate Capital, and a business professor at Rollins College. At the Department of Defense, she received the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service and contributed to U.S. policy in the Asia Pacific, focusing on capacity building, disaster preparedness, special operations, and counterterrorism. Murphy began her business career at Deloitte Consulting, providing strategic advice to multinational companies, and later served as an instructor of finance at Rollins College, where she helped launch the social entrepreneurship program.

A mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando motivated Murphy to run for political office, leading to her election as the first Vietnamese American woman and only the second Vietnamese American to serve in Congress. Her bipartisan leadership, including her role as co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition, earned recognition from the Lugar Center's Bipartisan Index. Murphy led on trade and national security issues, established the Employee Retention Tax Credit, and contributed to infrastructure and climate change policies. She was appointed to the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack and co-led the committee's seventh hearing alongside Representative Jamie Raskin.

Murphy served on the House Ways and Means Committee, Armed Services Committee, Small Business Committee, and the Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6th Attack on the Capitol. Her legislative achievements include leading the bipartisan effort to lift the federal gun violence research ban and creating a tax benefit to help businesses retain and rehire workers. Murphy is recognized for her pragmatic, moderate approach and bipartisan legislative record, informed by experience in strategy consulting, investment management, defense policy, and academia.

After leaving Congress, Murphy founded the Center Aisle Coalition, which advocates for bipartisan solutions in American politics. She serves in advisory roles for organizations in the financial services, consumer products, and pharmaceutical industries, and is a national security advisory board member for RAND Corporation and the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security, as well as co-chair of the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition. Murphy continues her commitment to public service and national policy through these roles.
