Political Analyst, Historian & Author; Founder of The Baffler; Author of "What's the Matter with Kansas?"
Thomas Frank Biography
Thomas Frank is an American political analyst, historian, and author whose work explores the intersection of economics, culture, and electoral politics in the United States. Frank earned his master's and doctorate at the University of Chicago, specializing in 20th-century American cultural and intellectual history. His doctoral thesis on advertising in the 1960s was published as "The Conquest of Cool: Business Culture, Counterculture, and the Rise of Hip Consumerism." He also founded The Baffler, a leftist journal, while in college.
Frank gained national attention with the book "What's the Matter with Kansas?", which examines why many Americans vote against their economic and social interests by focusing on Kansas, a state once known for its radicalism that later became a participant in the culture wars. The book became a New York Times bestseller, won the Eugene V. Debs Award, and was named Best Political Book of the Year by The New York Times. Frank's central argument—that working-class voters have been persuaded to support policies contrary to their economic interests—sparked a national conversation about American politics.
As a historian of culture and ideas, Frank analyzes trends in American electoral politics, propaganda, advertising, popular culture, journalism, and economics. His work addresses topics such as the rhetoric and impact of culture wars and the relationship between politics, economics, and culture in the United States. Frank's subsequent books include "Listen, Liberal: Whatever Happened to the Party of the People," "The People, No!: A Brief History of Anti-Populism," "The Wrecking Crew," "Pity the Billionaire," and "One Market Under God," each examining different aspects of American political and economic life.
Frank has served as a columnist for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, is a founding editor of The Baffler, and writes regularly for Harper's and The Guardian. His book "The Creativity Con: How Innovation Became America's Biggest Racket" critiques the nation's focus on creativity and innovation, arguing that these concepts have shaped political and economic discourse while masking inequality and protecting elite interests. Frank has discussed these themes in interviews with Bloomberg and at venues including Harvard Book Store, City Lights in San Francisco, and Town Hall Seattle.
