 Marsai Martin Biography

Actress Marsai Martin has already established herself as a rising star well beyond her years. She is best known for her breakout role in ABC’s Black-ish and now heads her own production company, Genius Productions. In recognition of her already substantial career, Martin was featured on Time magazine’s 100 Next list in 2019 and at 14 years old, was the youngest person to get a first-look deal at Universal, and the youngest person to get a deal at any studio in history.

Martin began acting at the age of 5 and landed her first major role as Diane Johnson on ABC’s critically acclaimed and Emmy-nominated hit comedy series Black-ish alongside Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Laurence Fishburne. Her performance on the award-winning sitcom has earned her five NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance by a Youth, a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Series, and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Martin also performed in the 35th Anniversary Celebration of the Tony Award-winning Musical Dreamgirls with the original stars including Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, and Jennifer Holliday, singing the hit song “Move”. Her feature credits include Amazon’s An American Girl Story: Melody 1962 – Love Has To Win, which was set in Detroit during the Civil Rights Movement, How To Die Happy with Meagan Good, and Fun Mom Dinner with Adam Scott, Katie Aselton, Toni Collette, and Adam Levine.

At 14 years old, Martin became the youngest Hollywood executive producer ever when she pitched the movie Little to Universal Pictures. The film, in which Martin also stars, centers around a tech mogul who is transformed into her younger, carefree self (Martin) when the pressures of adulthood become too much. The film premiered in 2019 featuring stars Issa Rae and Regina Hall.

Most recently, Martin made history once again when she inked a first-look deal with Universal. Her first film as part of the deal is StepMonster, a comedy about a teenage girl, played by Martin, who is adjusting to life with a new stepmother. The film, along with Martin’s other projects, will be produced by her production company, Genius Productions. With her rapid growing success, Martin has teamed up with In The Know, Verizon Media’s Gen-Z video platform, to launch Money With Marsai Martin, a new finance series aimed at teaching Gen-Z about financial literacy. Coming up, Martin will be lending her voice-over talents to the upcoming feature films Spirit Untamed and Paw Patrol: The Movie. She is also slated to both produce and star in upcoming film Amari and the Night Brothers. She will also produce the comedy film Queen, currently in development. Adding to her list of ever-growing credits, Martin will be producing Saturdays, a groundbreaking series following a girl with sickle cell anemia and her competitive roller skating crew for Disney Channel. Diversifying her portfolio of work, discovery+ has greenlit Martin’s new home series, Remix My Space, where she will be using her passion for interior design to help extraordinary teens get personalized bedroom makeovers.

Having already made a name for herself both producing and on-screen, Martin is a young trailblazer on track to becoming one of the biggest names in Hollywood.
