Sean Michael Leonard Anderson, better known as Big Sean, is a rapper, singer, and songwriter celebrated for his introspective lyrics, clever wordplay, and charismatic performance. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, he drew early attention by participating in rap battles during his adolescence, subsequently building a local reputation. His significant breakthrough occurred when he encountered Kanye West at a radio station. Impressing West with a freestyle led to a deal with West’s label, G.O.O.D. Music in 2007, in association with Def Jam Recordings. Big Sean, however, amicably parted ways with G.O.O.D. Music in 2021.
Big Sean's inaugural studio album, "Finally Famous", released on June 28, 2011, marked his entry into the mainstream, with hits such as "My Last" and "Dance (A$$)," exhibiting his fusion of braggadocio and introspection. His career trajectory continued to ascend with a series of prosperous projects like "Hall of Fame" (2013), "Dark Sky Paradise" (2015), and "I Decided" (2017). Both "Dark Sky Paradise" and "I Decided" attained top spot on the Billboard 200 upon their debut. His collaborations with noteworthy artists such as Kanye West, Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Jhené Aiko notably heightened his profile. Additionally, his contributions extend to singles like Kelly Rowland's "Lay It on Me" in 2011. Notably, he released a collaborative EP with Hit-Boy titled "What You Expect" in October 2021 and a single "Tobey" with Eminem and BabyTron in July 2024. Big Sean's sixth studio album, "Better Me Than You," was released in August 2024 and entered the Billboard 200 at number 25.
Aside from his solo work, Big Sean has garnered attention for his collaboration with Jhené Aiko as part of the duo Twenty88. Their eponymous project introduced a more experimental, R&B-infused sound that fans warmly received. His lyrics frequently delve into personal themes such as ambition, mental health, love, and his upbringing in Detroit, lending his music relatability and impact. In 2016, he released a collaborative album with Jhené Aiko titled "Twenty88." A new TWENTY88 album with Jhené Aiko is currently in progress.
Outside of music, Big Sean is invested in philanthropy and community engagement. In May 2012, he established the Sean Anderson Foundation, dedicated to enhancing the lives of young individuals and underserved communities through education, wellness, and cultural enrichment initiatives. Through his foundation, he launched #HealFlintKids in 2016 to aid the Flint water crisis, and managed to raise $100,000. In 2019, he partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan to donate a second $100,000 recording studio. He’s also been engaged in mental health advocacy, using his platform to candidly discuss therapy and emotional well-being.
