 Jon Birger Biography

Jon Birger is the author of the newly published book, "DATE-ONOMICS: How Dating Became a Lopsided Numbers Game." In his book, he explains how shifting gender ratios affect everything from dating and hookup culture in the U.S. to wealth creation in China.

DATE-ONOMICS uses demographics and behavioral science to explain a familiar phenomenon—the everything-going-for-her career woman who can't seem to meet a decent man. Birger argues that college gender ratios—four women graduating for every three men—are behind the rise of the campus hookup culture as well as declining marriage rates among young, heterosexual college grads in the U.S. as well as abroad.

He also predicts an inevitable increase in what he calls "mixed-collar marriages"—pairings of college-educated women and non-college-educated men—couplings already common in the African American community where the college gender gap is more extreme.

In his talks, Jon covers topics from campus rape to dating after college to the best places to live for each gender seeking a partner. He also explains how we got here--to this ratio-- and how the skewed dating ratios might affect advertising (amongst other things).

Jon is a contributor to Fortune Magazine and a freelance journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time, Barron's, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, New York Magazine, and Crain's New York Business. From 2005 to 2010, Jon was a senior writer at Fortune, and from 2000 to 2005, he was a senior writer at Money Magazine.

Date-onomics: How Dating Became a Lopsided Numbers Game

Speaking Topics
  • Sex Ratios 101

A discussion of the lopsided gender ratios in college and how they contribute to the college and post-college hookup culture.

  • Dating After College

There are now 4 women graduating from college for every 3 men, and the U.S. Department of Education projects that by 2023 it will be 3 women for every 2 men. These lopsided numbers creates a tough dating market for college-educated women and encourage college-educated men to delay marriage and play the field. My prediction is that we will see an increase in what I call "mixed-collar marriages" —i.e. pairings of college-educated women and working class men (who face their own demographic dating challenges).

  • Lopsided Gender Ratios and the Campus Rape Problem

Studies of FBI and Interpol crime data show a clear connection between higher sexual assault rates and low ratios of men to women. To put it crudely, men value women less when women are in oversupply.... Given the research, colleges with especially lopsided gender ratios should at least be investigating whether these ratios are contributing to the campus sexual assault problem.

  • Women in Corporate America

In a world in which, most college graduates, most med school graduates and most law school graduates are women, Corporate America better take notice. Women will soon displace men as primary consumers of luxury goods and it won't be much longer before a majority of the managers making decisions on vendors, suppliers and services are women.
