Alastair Campbell Biography

Alastair Campbell is a British journalist, author, strategist, and broadcaster known for his influential role in modern political communications. Campbell served as political editor at Daily Mirror and Today, where he developed a reputation for incisive political analysis within British media. He later became press secretary to Tony Blair upon Blair's leadership of the Labour Party. In his autobiography, Blair credited Campbell with coining the phrase "New Labour" and acknowledged his significant contributions to the party's strategy and electoral success.

Campbell acted as Blair's spokesman and campaign director in opposition, then as Downing Street press secretary and the prime minister's official spokesperson, before becoming director of communications and strategy. He was seconded to NATO to oversee communications during the Kosovo conflict. Campbell played a central role in the founding of New Labour and the party's return to power. He appeared before the Leveson Inquiry into press standards and won a phone-hacking case against News International, later serving as a witness in a case involving the Mirror Group.

After leaving frontline politics, Campbell established a career as an author, commentator, and strategist. He has written 19 books, including 11 volumes of diaries, four novels, and the best-selling analysis "Winners and How They Succeed." His book "But What Can I Do? Why Politics Has Gone So Wrong, and How You Can Help Fix It" became a Sunday Times bestseller. Campbell co-hosts the podcast "The Rest Is Politics" with Rory Stewart, which has achieved high rankings in the UK podcast charts and has featured live events at major venues such as Albert Hall and Usher Hall.

Campbell is recognized for his advocacy of mental health awareness. At age 29, he experienced a major stress-related breakdown, leading to hospitalization, and has since spoken openly about his experiences with depression and addiction. He was among the first public figures to address mental illness candidly, contributing to reduced stigma. Campbell shared his story in the BBC documentary "Cracking Up" and presented "Alastair Campbell: Depression and Me," exploring mental health coping mechanisms. His work in this field earned him an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Campbell co-founded the all-party campaign Equality4MentalHealth, which secured additional funding for mental health services.
