Susan L. Solomon is CEO and co-founder of The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF), a non-profit organization established in 2005 to accelerate stem cell research through private philanthropy and private public partnership. NYSCF conducts advanced research in its own state-of-the-art stem cell research facilities in collaboration with leading medical institutions and also supports critical advanced stem cell research by leading scientists in other institutions; the foundation also provides support for the next generation of stem cell researchers through the NYSCF Fellowship Program and the NYSCF Investigator Program; and holds the major international conference on translational stem cell research.
A longtime healthcare advocate, Ms. Solomon is a founding member and current President of NYAMR (New Yorkers for the Advancement of Medical Research), is on the Executive and Nominating Committees for the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine, and she has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, New York Chapter. Ms. Solomon was integral to the establishment of the Empire State Stem Cell Trust, and was a member of the Strategic Planning Committee of the Empire State Stem Cell Board. She is also on the Board of Directors for the Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine and the Regional Plan Association of NY. In December 2012, Ms. Solomon received the Stem Cell Action Leadership Award from the Genetics Policy Institute. In March 2008, Ms. Solomon received a New York State Women of Excellence Award from the Governor of New York, and, in September 2008, she received the Triumph Award from the Brooke Ellison Foundation for her work in establishing NYSCF.
Prior to founding NYSCF, Ms. Solomon, an attorney and entrepreneur, spent much of her career building businesses. She established and ran Solomon Partners LLC to provide strategic management consulting to corporations, cultural institutions, foundations and non-profit organizations. She was the founding Chief Executive Officer of Sothebys.com. She has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lancit Media Productions, an Emmy award-winning children’s television production company, and as the President of Sony Worldwide Networks, a company formed to oversee the Sony Corporation of America’s investments in satellite and cable radio and to assist in the development of worldwide music video channels and internet broadcasting. Ms. Solomon has also held executive positions at MacAndrews and Forbes Holdings and MMG Patricof and Co.
Ms. Solomon practiced law with Debevoise & Plimpton before beginning her career in business. She received her BA from New York University and her JD from Rutgers University School of Law, where she was an editor of the Law Review. She has three grown sons: Adam Hirsh, a composer in Los Angeles; Ben Goldberger, a journalist in Chicago, and Alex Goldberger, an Olympics researcher for NBC Sports in New York. She is married to Paul Goldberger, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer on architecture, design and planning who is a contributing editor at Vanity Fair.
