Carrie Brownstein Biography

Carrie Brownstein is a musician, actress, writer, director, and comedian known for her influential work in rock music and television. Brownstein first gained recognition as a member of the band Excuse 17 before co-founding the rock trio Sleater-Kinney. With Sleater-Kinney, she played a significant role in the riot grrrl movement within the Olympia music scene, contributing to third-wave feminism. The band released several studio albums, including "Call the Doctor," "Dig Me Out," "The Hot Rock," and "The Woods." Rolling Stone recognized Sleater-Kinney as a leading American punk rock band, and Brownstein was the only woman included in the magazine's readers' list of the 25 most underrated guitarists of all time.

Following Sleater-Kinney's hiatus, Brownstein expanded her creative pursuits into television. She co-created and starred in the comedy series "Portlandia" with Fred Armisen. The show, filmed in Portland, Oregon, satirizes the city's politically liberal and hipster culture. "Portlandia" received both Emmy and Peabody Awards, with Brownstein earning multiple Emmy nominations for writing and directing. Her directing credits extend to television shows for HBO, HBO Max, NBC, Comedy Central, and Hulu. Brownstein's film work includes the St. Vincent documentary "The Nowhere Inn" and a cameo in Todd Haynes's "Carol."

As an author, Brownstein wrote the memoir "Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl," which became a New York Times best seller and details her experiences in the riot grrrl scene and with Sleater-Kinney. She also contributed to NPR Music with the weblog "Monitor Mix" and has worked on the script for a Heart biographical film.

Sleater-Kinney later reunited, releasing additional albums such as "No Cities to Love," "The Center Won't Hold," "Path of Wellness," and "Little Rope." "Little Rope" was completed following a personal tragedy involving Brownstein's family and is noted for its emotional depth. Throughout her career, Brownstein has been recognized for her ability to blend personal experience and cultural commentary in music, television, and writing, establishing her as a multifaceted figure in the entertainment industry.
