Jack Becker Biography

Jack Becker is a Minneapolis-based artist and nonprofit leader recognized for his work in contemporary public art. Becker is the founder emeritus of Forecast Public Art, a nonprofit organization established to advance public art in the United States. He played a significant role in integrating artists into urban planning, policy, and public life, positioning Forecast as one of the first nonprofits in the country dedicated to public art initiatives. Becker earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where he studied under artists Siah Armajani and Andrew Leicester.

Becker's career in public art began with his role as gallery director for City Art Productions, a program funded by the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce and the Minneapolis Arts Commission. In this position, he facilitated partnerships between artists and available spaces throughout the city. When the program concluded, Becker established Forecast Public Art to continue supporting artists and public art projects. He has also served as Art in Public Places coordinator for the City of Minneapolis and as arts development manager for the City of St. Paul.

With more than four decades of experience, Becker has contributed to the field as an artist, producer, curator, writer, publisher, and arts administrator. He established two landmark programs for Forecast: "Public Art Affairs," a statewide grant program for emerging artists, and the national journal "Public Art Review," where he serves as editor. Forecast also launched Public Art Services, offering consulting, facilitation, and a range of services related to arts development, public art planning, and commissioning. Becker has organized more than 70 exhibitions, 50 publications, and numerous special events focused on public art and community engagement.

Becker is an author and public speaker on topics related to public art, placemaking, and arts policy. He wrote the introduction to "Public Art / Public Space: The Sculptural Environments of Barbara Grygutis," drawing on his background in theater and visual arts to explore the intersection of artists' ideas and community needs. As publisher of "Public Art Review," Becker addresses trends and critical issues in public art, advocating for broader understanding and participation in the public art ecosystem. He maintains that public art, despite its prevalence, is often misunderstood and overlooked, fueling his ongoing advocacy and educational efforts.

Becker has received recognition for his contributions to public art, including the Award of Excellence from Americans for the Arts, a Lifetime Achievement Award from Public Art Dialogue, and the Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award from Minneapolis College of Art & Design. He has been described by art critics as a leading figure in arts administration and public art advocacy, continuing to influence the intersection of art, community, and civic engagement.
