 Rodney Jerkins Biography

In the short span of six years, producer Rodney Jerkins meteoric rise as a self-contained musician, songwriter, producer, and executive producer has earned him the title of "hitmaker" in the industry. Although only 21 years old, his honed talent surpasses his age and has secured him a place in the elite circle of highly sought-after pop, R&B, and gospel music producers. He has worked with industry heavyweights like Whitney Houston, Brandy, Monica, Mary J. Blige, Joe, Will Smith, Kirk Franklin, Blackstreet, Tatyana Ali, and Debra Cox, as well as Grammy winner Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.

This hardworking young man was only fifteen years old when he embarked upon writing and producing his own gospel album titled On The Move. This eventually led him to pursue his impressive career in the entertainment industry.

1997 proved to be Rodney's breakthrough year as he penned, produced, and arranged five songs for Mary J. Blige's Share My World album, which has sold more than four million copies. Blige's single "I Can Love You", which skyrocketed to number two on the R&B charts, was also co-written and produced by Rodney. Subsequently, he was ranked by Billboard as #22 of the hottest R&B singles producers in the country that year.

Recently, Rodney's reputation as "hitmaker and A-list producer" landed him an opportunity to work with megastar and pop diva Whitney Houston. He is a prominent force on Houston's My Love Is Your Love album on which he produced, co-wrote and played on "It's Not Right But It's Okay", "If I Told You That", and "If I Just Could Get It Back". He also teamed up with veteran producer Babyface to produce Houston's "I Bow Out".

Rodney is responsible for propelling pop teen divas Brandy and Monica to their first number-one single with the Grammy-nominated duet "The Boy Is Mine". He co-wrote and produced the song which was the number one pop single of 1998, topped Billboard charts for thirteen consecutive weeks, was nominated as "song of the year" at the 1999 Billboard Awards, and made history as the second fastest selling single since 1991. The overwhelming success of the song was not only a national pop and R&B phenomena; it spiked international charts as well. In fact, because of the song's remarkable success in the United Kingdom, Rodney received England's coveted Malibu Awards' MOBO (Music of Black Origin) award for "Best Producer of the Year" in 1998.

Brandy's wildly successful album, Never Say Never is heavily influenced by Rodney Jerkins. He is the executive producer and co-writer and producer of eleven of the included songs. As a result of his wall-to-wall gems, the album scored high marks, was nominated at both the Grammy and Billboard Awards ceremonies in 1999 and is a multi-platinum seller.

Rodney's talents also extend into the movie realm. He co-wrote, produced and arranged the R&B hit "Don't Wanna Be A Player" which was included on the Booty Call soundtrack. "That's Why I Lie" from the Dr Doolittle soundtrack was also co-written and produced by Rodney and resulted in more than two million copies sold.

1999 has seen the third number one single written and produced by Rodney Jerkins with Jennifer Lopez's "If You Had My Love". Since then, Rodney has kept busy branching out to other genres working with the Spice Girls and country songstress Leann Rimes. He is currently in the studio with Michael Jackson finishing the "King of Pop's" comeback album to be released in the Fall of this year. Other forthcoming projects from Rodney include recordings with Will Smith, Puff Daddy, and Toni Braxton.

With his resume reflecting the "Who's Who" of pop and R&B, Rodney's influence on megastars and music's newcomers is indisputable. Bursting with fresh ideas and brimming with talent, his full potential is yet to be realized.
