Kenneth B. Morris Jr. Biography

Kenneth B. Morris Jr. is the great-great-great-grandson of Frederick Douglass and the great-great-grandson of Booker T. Washington. His lineage traces through his mother's family, with his grandmother, Nettie Hancock Washington II, granddaughter of Booker T. Washington, and his grandfather, Dr. Frederick Douglass III, great-grandson of Frederick Douglass, meeting at Tuskegee Institute and marrying shortly thereafter. Although Morris grew up aware of this heritage, he initially distanced himself from his family's legacy.

A National Geographic cover story titled "21st Century Slaves" served as a turning point for Morris, prompting him to engage with issues of modern slavery, racial justice, and human rights. He co-founded the Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives (FDFI) alongside Nettie Washington Douglass and Robert J. Benz. As co-founder and president of FDFI, Morris leads the nonprofit organization based in Rochester, New York, which focuses on educating the public about human trafficking, racial inequality, and disparities in economic, health, and educational opportunities.

FDFI's 1 Million Abolitionists Project seeks to distribute Frederick Douglass' autobiography, "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave," to one million young people nationwide. Morris has contributed to several publications, including the preface to Isaac Julien's "Lessons of the Hour," the afterword to "Picturing Frederick Douglass: An Illustrated Biography of the Nineteenth Century's Most Photographed American," and the foreword to a bicentennial edition of "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave." He has also worked as a producer on documentary projects such as "Lion of Anacostia" and "Harriet Tubman: Visions of Freedom," and appeared as a historian in the television mini-series "Abraham Lincoln."

Morris is a frequent public speaker, addressing charitable organizations, government agencies, civic groups, and students across the United States. He has lectured at institutions including Columbia University, Morehouse College, UNLV, Tuskegee University, Loyola University Chicago, and Yale University, and has appeared on CNN, Democracy Now!, PBS, NPR, The Tavis Smiley Show, and CBS Evening News. He has also delivered keynote addresses at the United Nations and was a featured speaker at a White House event honoring descendants of civil rights leaders.

Morris has received recognition for his advocacy, including an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of La Verne, the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom's Frederick Douglass Underground Railroad Legacy Award, the Women's E-News 21 Leaders for the 21st Century Ida B. Wells Award for Bravery in Journalism, and the University of Rochester's Frederick Douglass Medal. He serves as a director of the Frederick Douglass Ireland Project, an ambassador for Human Rights First, and chair of the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Commission. Through his work in civil rights, social justice, and anti-trafficking advocacy, Morris continues to advance the mission of his ancestors, emphasizing the ongoing importance of freedom and equality.
