Roy Moore Biography

Roy Moore is an American jurist, politician, and author known for his advocacy of religious expression in public life. Moore graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served as a company commander with the Military Police Corps during the Vietnam War before earning a law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law. He became the first full-time deputy district attorney in Etowah County, Alabama, before entering the judiciary as a circuit judge, a role that marked the beginning of his public profile.

As a circuit judge in Gadsden, Alabama, Moore became widely recognized after displaying a wood-burned plaque of the Ten Commandments behind his bench and inviting clergy to lead prayers before trials. This attention contributed to his election as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. Upon taking office, Moore commissioned and installed a granite monument engraved with the Ten Commandments in the rotunda of the Alabama Judicial Building, asserting that the monument acknowledged the moral and legal foundations of American governance. The installation led to a legal battle, including the case Glassroth v. Moore, with organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union and the Southern Poverty Law Center challenging the monument's constitutionality under the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

After refusing a federal court order to remove the monument, Moore was removed from office by the Alabama Court of the Judiciary. He continued his advocacy as president of the Foundation for Moral Law, an organization he helped establish to promote the acknowledgment of God in law and government, and lectured nationwide on American legal history and religious heritage. Moore authored the book "So Help Me God: The Ten Commandments, Judicial Tyranny, and the Battle for Religious Freedom," in which he argued that government officials have both the right and the obligation to acknowledge God as the foundation of American jurisprudence.

Moore was later re-elected as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, reflecting continued support among conservative voters. His second tenure ended when he was suspended for instructing probate judges to refuse to issue same-sex marriage licenses following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. Moore subsequently resigned from the bench to run as the Republican nominee in a special U.S. Senate election, a campaign that drew national attention. Throughout his career, Moore has remained a prominent figure in debates over the intersection of religion, law, and government, known for his involvement in high-profile legal battles and his advocacy for the role of Judeo-Christian principles in American constitutional law.
