Evolutionary Biologist & Science Communicator; Author of "The Selfish Gene"; Emeritus Fellow at Oxford
Professor Richard Dawkins Biography
Richard Dawkins is a British evolutionary biologist, ethologist, zoologist, and science communicator known for his contributions to evolutionary theory and science education. Dawkins is an emeritus fellow of New College, Oxford, and served as the University of Oxford's Professor for Public Understanding of Science. He was the inaugural holder of the Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University and is a fellow of the Royal Society.
Dawkins gained prominence with his book "The Selfish Gene," which popularized the gene-centered view of evolution and introduced the term meme. He argued that genes are the primary units of natural selection, presenting organisms as vehicles constructed by genes for their own replication. In "The Extended Phenotype," Dawkins expanded on evolutionary biology by proposing that the effects of genes can extend beyond an organism's body into the environment. His other works include "The Blind Watchmaker," which received the Royal Society of Literature Award, as well as "The God Delusion," "The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution," and "The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True."
Dawkins has received honors such as the Royal Society of Literature Award, the Michael Faraday Prize of the Royal Society, the Kistler Prize, the Shakespeare Prize, the Lewis Thomas Prize for Writing about Science, the Galaxy British Book Awards Author of the Year Award, and the International Cosmos Prize of Japan. He holds honorary doctorates in science from the University of Westminster, the University of Durham, the University of Hull, the Open University, and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Dawkins founded the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science, which promotes scientific literacy and secularism.
His book "The Genetic Book of the Dead" explores Darwinian evolution and its insights into the past. Marking the anniversary of "The Selfish Gene," Dawkins has engaged audiences in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and the European Union, discussing evolutionary biology, genetics, and science communication. As the originator of the term meme and the gene-centered model of evolution, Dawkins has influenced both the scientific community and public discourse on science and reason.
