Blaise Aguera y Arcas is a software engineer, software architect, and designer. Currently, in his work as a distinguished scientist at Google, he leads a team that works on developing artificial intelligence, or AI, for mobile devices. Aguera y Arcas is a recognized authority on computer vision, machine intelligence, and computational photography. Aguera y Arcas is also the founder of Google's Artists and Machine Intelligence Program, which teams up machine learning engineers and artists to create art.
Prior to starting at Google in 2013, Aguera y Arcas was a Distinguished Engineer at Microsoft, a role in which he served as the architect of Bing Maps and Bing Mobile. Aguera y Arcas joined Microsoft in 2006 when his startup company, Seadragon, was acquired. Seadragon, which he founded in 2003, is known for having created the technology that allows graphics or photos with large file sizes to be browsed on the web.
Aguera y Arcas has a broad background in computer science and applied math and has worked in a variety of fields, including computational neuroscience, computational drug design, and data compression. He holds a bachelor's degree in physics from Princeton University.
