John Corbett Biography
Born and raised in West Virginia, John Corbett moved to California not to be an actor, but to work in a steel factory. After six years of manual labor, he sustained an injury that forced him to change careers. He attended a local city college and decided to sit in on a friend's acting class. What he saw intrigued him, and he began taking acting classes himself. After several appearances in college stage productions, his drama teacher encouraged him to give Hollywood a try.
It wasn't long before Corbett made his TV debut with a guest appearance on "The Wonder Years" (1988), followed by the regular role of Chris Stevens on the offbeat CBS series, "Northern Exposure," in 1990. In 1992 he received an Emmy nomination for "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series," and in 1993 he was nominated for a Golden Globe as "Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series."
He stayed with the show until it came to a close in 1995, but in the meantime, he had also started on a film career with roles in "Flight of the Intruder" (1991) and "Tombstone" (1993). Once he was no longer committed to Northern Exposure, Corbett found himself working steadily in TV movies and feature films. He again took a regular role in a TV series with "The Visitor" in 1997, but the show folded after only 13 episodes.
In 2000, he joined the cast of "Sex and the City," playing Aidan Shaw for three seasons and earning his second Golden Globe nomination. While on hiatus from the show, Corbett filmed the romantic lead in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Made on a budget of $5 million, the film was a surprise hit, earning almost $250 million at the domestic box office. Although a familiar face due to his TV work, Corbett suddenly found himself a movie star.
When it was transformed into a TV series called "My Big Fat Greek Life," Corbett opted not to reprise his role as Ian Miller, instead starring in the TV series "Lucky." Neither series lasted longer than a season though, and Corbett returned to the big screen as Pastor Dan, the romantic interest of Kate Hudson's character in "Raising Helen" (2004). He also starred as Hilary Duff's music teacher in "Raise Your Voice" (2004) and played Aidan Shaw in "Sex and the City 2" (2010). More recently, he starred in "The Boy Next Door" (2015). Corbett also reprised his role as Ian Miller in the 2016 film, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2."
