David Goerlitz Biography

David Goerlitz is an American actor, model, writer, public speaker, and educator recognized for his role as the lead Winston Man in R.J. Reynolds' cigarette advertising campaign. Goerlitz appeared as the central figure in the "Search and Rescue" advertisement series, which contributed to Winston Cigarettes' rise in global sales rankings. He was featured in 42 of these ads, more than any other tobacco model, including those in the Marlboro Men campaign. During his tenure, the Winston Man was depicted climbing mountains and piloting helicopters, projecting an image of rugged masculinity that resonated with consumers worldwide.

After his brother was diagnosed with cancer, Goerlitz publicly quit smoking during the Great American Smokeout. He then became an outspoken critic of tobacco industry advertising, alleging that the sale of tobacco products targets young people. This shift marked the beginning of his work as a public speaker, reaching audiences in 49 states and seven countries. Goerlitz estimates that millions of young people have seen his presentations in person or through media appearances.

Goerlitz joined the anti-smoking movement and testified before Congress, drawing on his firsthand experience within the tobacco industry. He has been recognized by organizations such as the World Health Organization, the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, and the American Heart Association. Goerlitz has toured schools and colleges internationally, sharing his story throughout North America, Taiwan, Japan, and Sweden.

Goerlitz authored the book "Before the Smoke Screen," which details his addiction to nicotine, his career as a lead model for Winston cigarettes, his disillusionment with tobacco advertising, and his efforts to counteract the impact of tobacco marketing on youth. After two decades of public speaking and education, Goerlitz became disillusioned with the anti-smoking movement and later advocated for the vaping industry, appearing in the documentary film "A Billion Lives."
