Root attended the University of Florida, where he initially studied journalism before shifting his focus to theater after discovering a passion for performance. He joined the National Shakespeare Company, touring the United States and performing in productions such as "The Winter's Tale," "The Comedy of Errors," and "Romeo and Juliet." Root began his professional career on stage, making his Broadway debut in the play "Journey's End." He later contributed to the University of Florida by funding an acting studio, now named the Stephen Root Acting Studio.

Root gained recognition for his roles as Jimmy James on the NBC sitcom "NewsRadio" and as Milton Waddams in the comedy film "Office Space." His portrayal of Milton Waddams in "Office Space" became a defining role, while his work on "NewsRadio" showcased his comedic range.
